Precision tools for musical minds
Forma Labs Audio builds MIDI orchestration tools for composers and producers. With over a decade of professional film and media scoring experience, every feature in filament exists because it solved a real problem in our own work.
The philosophy is simple: music software should feel like an extension of your creative mind, not an obstacle to overcome. Workflow friction kills creativity — so we obsess over eliminating it.
Based in Manchester, Forma Labs Audio is focused on building professional-grade tools that respect your time and your craft.
Features mean nothing if they slow you down. Every interaction is designed to keep you in creative flow, not fighting the software.
Powerful features shouldn't require a manual. We spend months refining interfaces until sophisticated operations feel intuitive.
Every feature in filament exists because it solved a real problem in actual compositions. No hypothetical features, no bloat.
Professional tools for professional work. No compromises on quality, no subscriptions.
Started building the first prototypes to solve orchestration bottlenecks in my own workflow.
Years of development, testing different approaches to MIDI routing and instrument hosting.
The core architecture solidifies: 64 instrument slots, intelligent routing matrix, real-time revoicing.
filament opens to beta testers. Building alongside early users to refine the experience.
Sample libraries are incredibly powerful, but orchestrating them is painfully slow. Managing keyswitches, duplicating MIDI across instruments, tweaking CC data for each track — it's tedious work that pulls you out of the creative flow.
filament exists to solve this. One plugin that hosts your entire orchestral template, with intelligent routing that handles the technical complexity so you can focus on the music.
This isn't about replacing your creative decisions — it's about removing the friction between having an idea and hearing it played back by a full orchestra.
Will is an award-winning composer and software developer based in Bristol, UK. With a Master's in Composition from the National Film and Television School and over a decade scoring for film, TV, and games, he's written music for BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 4, Disney+, National Geographic, and Hulu.
Working in fast-paced broadcast environments—where turnaround times are measured in days, not weeks—Will repeatedly hit the same workflow bottleneck: orchestrating sample libraries was too slow. The technical overhead of managing dozens of instrument tracks, endless keyswitch programming, and MIDI routing consumed time that should have been spent on creative decisions.
filament grew directly from that frustration. Built over five years of active scoring work, it's designed to handle the technical complexity of orchestral templates so composers can focus on the music—whether scoring a six-part BBC series or exploring ideas in real-time.
