Filament 1.2

Forma Labs Audio has released Filament 1.2.0, adding MPE expression, Auto Divisi and Host Mode to its real-time MIDI orchestration engine.

Filament turns a keyboard performance into an arrangement across the instruments and sample libraries you already use. It hosts up to 64 AU/VST3 instruments in one DAW track, with real-time routing, arpeggiation and MIDI clip launching.

What’s new in 1.2

  • MPE: Per-note pitch bend, pressure and timbre for hosted instruments.
  • Auto Divisi: Automatically distribute chord notes across instrument parts.
  • Host Mode: Play edited DAW MIDI parts directly through Filament’s hosted instruments.
  • Note-off Revoice: Choose whether releasing a key redistributes the remaining notes.
  • Routing highlights: See connections across input layers more clearly.
  • Matrix Mute/Solo: Silence or isolate instrument rows directly from the routing matrix.

Filament also includes MIDI output routing, introduced in version 1.1.

Filament is available for Mac and Windows as VST3, AU on macOS, and Standalone, priced at £149 for a perpetual licence. Version 1.2.0 is a free update for existing owners. Instrument plugins and sample libraries are supplied by the user.

Earlier updates and MIDI routing background

Earlier additions since the v1.1 launch

  • Managed MIDI output ports. The Filament MIDI Port Manager adds named Filament Out ports on macOS and Windows, with an external destination and MIDI channel selectable for each output row.
  • Articulation-map import. Import Cubase Expression Maps and Logic Articulation Settings into Filament articulation-map presets, reusing existing articulation work.
  • More complete MIDI clip export. Clip drag-and-drop preserves controller events as well as notes, keeping more of the performance when moving MIDI into the DAW.

How the MIDI port system works

Each output row can send its processed MIDI to a hosted instrument, Host MIDI Out, or a named external MIDI port. Choosing a port opens a channel selector for channels 1–16, so separate orchestral parts can feed individual DAW tracks or other MIDI destinations while retaining their keyswitch, routing and MIDI-processing settings.

The optional Filament MIDI Port Manager keeps the Filament Out ports available as normal system MIDI inputs. It runs in the macOS menu bar or Windows notification area and lets you choose how many ports are active. Select the matching port and channel on the receiving DAW track. This provides a route into DAWs where plugin MIDI output is limited or hidden; exact setup depends on the host.
